Mostly the difference is were it comes from and what's inside. There are three basic methods for salt. First, salt can be mined because it is part of the natural rock formations, such as halite. The mined salt can be treated and processed in regular table salt. Secondly, salt can be obtained from the ocean and produced by evaporation of water and leaving salt behind. Salt may also be processed to produce a sea salt that looks and feels basically identical to table salt. However, because there are often additional minerals left after evaporation of sea water, sea salt can provide a little more food in this context that other forms of salt. Third, the salt can be produced from scratch in a science lab, although you will not see this type of salt at the grocery store because other ways to get salt are much cheaper. From the point of view of religious dietary laws, "kosher salt" is somewhat a misnomer since all pure salt would be technically considered kosher because its purely mineral (more than sodium chloride) composition. This rule applies to all the pure salt, it was originally obtained sea or land. However, in a practical sense every day that makes kosher salt is different size and shape. Whether obtained from sea salt or salt extract, the production of kosher salt takes place with a change in the process of evaporation lead to much larger pieces and irregular salt.
